The federal government is currently in a shutdown. At this time, there are no immediate impacts to federally funded child and family programs operated by the Colorado Department of Early Childhood. Families should continue to access care and services as usual.

We are monitoring the situation closely with federal partners and will share updates as soon as more information becomes available.

Ages 3 to 5 - Physical Development & Health Guidelines

The Physical Development and Health domain describes children’s physical well-being; knowledge of their body; health, safety, and nutrition practices; and development of motor skills

Children who have health problems, delays in development, and frequent illness may struggle with a number of challenges in school. Children’s knowledge of their body and health affect their development of healthy habits early in life, habits that are key to lifelong health.

This area includes skills that enable children to develop healthy habits, such as:

  • Keeping themselves physically safe
  • Completing self-care tasks by themselves
  • Exercising
  • Eating healthy food.

The development of motor skills allows children to explore and learn about their world and develop healthy bodies.

The Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines
Are you interested in learning about the expectations for your child's development based on their age? The Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines describe the path of children’s learning and development from birth to 8 years old. Broken down by age and major milestones, the guidelines are a sort of map, helping parents and caregivers navigate their child's early years. Experts from across Colorado developed these guidelines to create a shared understanding and a coordinated approach to learning and development.

Curious about what your little one is thinking at this age? Wondering what you can do to help them thrive and reach their developmental milestones? Check out the guidelines using the link below.
