Make Sure Your Baby Is Safe in Care

When looking for child care for a baby under a year old, there are some important things to keep in mind, including:

  • Does the program have experience caring for young babies?
  • Do they understand and practice safe sleep for babies?

There are many things to remember as you prepare to take your baby to child care for the first time. You may feel excited, scared, sad—or a mixture of emotions. This is completely normal. Knowing that your baby will be in a safe, nurturing program when you are away will help to ease the worry and anxiety you may feel.

When you visit child care programs, ask the providers to see where your baby will sleep and whether the staff has received training on safe sleep practices. Learn more about safe sleep. To help set your mind at ease, plan ahead for baby’s first day in child care. Use our checklist for baby’s first day to make sure you have everything ready so baby is safe and comfortable.
